En 1970, Shasta Fay Hepworth ( Katherine Waterston ), visite la maison de plage branlante de son ex-petit ami Larry « Doc » Sportello ( Joaquin Phoenix ) dans Gordita Beach, une ville fictive de Los Angeles County . Doc arrive aussi d’être un détective privé et hippie / tête de la dope . Shasta lui parle de son nouvel amant, Mickey Wolfmann ( Eric Roberts ), un riche promoteur immobilier . Elle demande Doc pour aider à prévenir la femme de Mickey ( Serena Scott Thomas ) et son amant d’avoir enlevé Mickey et engagé à un asile d’aliénés .
